Intensive work within the transference aims to modify implicit memories, rather than to effect relatively superficial changes in autobiographical memory. Experiences constructed in autobiographical memory are more likely to be inaccurate than accurate. Truth in psychotherapy makes sense only in the context of psychic reality. Beyond the creation of a narrative, psychoanalysis is the active construction of a new way of experiencing self with other. The patient's implicit memory or procedural representation of an experience of self with other lies in what Sandler and Joffe (1969) have called the non-experiential realm.

It seems then that experiences contributing to internal representations of object relationships are not, by and large, stored in declarative memory. 2What lies at the root of interpersonal problems, the transference relationship and quite possibly all aspects of the personality that we loosely denote by the term "unconscious", is not a series of episodes of caregiver interaction stored in the explicit memory but a set of procedures or implicit memories of interactional experience. These may be represented as self-other-affect triads, as Otto Kernberg (1988) has suggested, as a network of unconscious expectations, as Bowlby (1988) conceived, or they may simply be emergent properties of the nervous system, abstracting invariant information through the tendency of nerve-cells to survive together if activated together (Edelman, 1987; Stern, 1994).
