As with everything else, not all cameras’ auto-focus systems are the same. Generally (but not always), the more you pay for a newer body, the better you get. However, some cheaper new bodies may have much better AF systems than a body from the year before that was at a much higher price. It’s the same as with any technology— the price can come down and the quality can go up as new models are created and released. But often, it all boils down to getting what you pay for. A high-quality camera with a good AF system will probably not come cheap.

These 18% gray cards are a neutral grey and reflect the same amount of light in any lighting condition, so they provide a great reference.
