Cattell was a constant and unwavering critic of administrative and trustee interference in academic affairs. Not surprisingly, the university trustees had been trying since 1910 to retire him. However, key faculty members continued to support Cattell, arguing that he should not be fired for his "eccentricities" nor for his criticisms of the university President and trustees. Ultimately, the event that precipitated CattelPs firing was his support of conscientious objectors during World War I, which was part of his overall opposition to the war.
